    winching with dyneema and extension strap

    I understand dyneema rope does not have any stretch compared to steel wire rope.

    What about a 20 meter winch extension strap?

    Where would one place the damper when winching with dyneema rope and winch extension strap?

    I would always put the damper over the join, most straps and ropes will fail at the termination point rather than mid section unless they are damaged. In most cases there is a steel hook at this join and this is the most dangerous part if it becomes a projectile.

      I would put the dampener a metre or 2 on the car side of the hook. As OJ said it's the projectile in that situation.
      In an ideal situation the pin in the hook would let go first meaning the hook would remain attached to the extension strap. Worst case the extension strap fails right at the hook and the hook comes rocketing back at the car. Winch dampener might hang on if placed directly over the hook but it also might not. Safer to come a metre or so back.

      An extension strap is also designed to have no elasticity (no stretch). Both these straps and synthetic rope are much safer than steel wire provided you use the minimal number of shackles possible. If you can join straps without shackles then you should always do that. Use a rolled up magazine or paper between the straps so they don't get stuck together.

        For winch comps, the dampner is always at the hook because that's the dangerous bit. And another dampner where the extension meets the tree trunk protector, where there's usually a shackle.
