Last week I found that crappy ads were on websites that normally didn't have any & on others they'd replaced the usual ads. After noticing they all had the same name in small-print at the bottom, but also I was having similar ads as 'pop-ups' when I was sure I'd turned them off in the Firefox settings.
Turned out that some website must have downloaded an add-on onto Firefox without my knowledge, but was easily removed, I cleared cache, then restarted Firefox & no problems since!
(Add-on showed up at the top of the list.)

I suggest running Kaspersky TDSSkiller and combofix, both are very good at detecting and deleting root kits and registry changes that were made by spamware/adware etc. They are just one off runs, they don't install.
Another one that i have had really good success with preventing any such problems is host file ad blocking, been using it for years and works great. http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.zip download and extract and then run the bat file as administrator and then restart your computer. Blocks ebay ads, google ads and many more.
