The last 4x4 club I was in some years back was huge and about as much fun as a really boring meeting of parliament so I was a little apprehensive when I first met up with the Mudgee 4x4 club.
Turns out they're a great bunch however and a small enough group where it doesn't take long to get to know everyone. My first trip out with them was a mystery social/kids day in the Blue Mountains where we would do an easy drive and then have a long lunch at a picnic spot with some good water for everyone to have a swim. Of course that meant it would rain enough to scare Noah and his pets, but everyone threw the kids in their trucks and went anyway. The mystery track turned out to be a fire trail between Mountain Lagoon near Bilpin down to the Colo river off the Putty road. While not very rough in a 4x4 sense, the drive is through dense forest and in the mist it was brilliant. We drove down the track and returned the same way. First up - here's the Prez's 80 series. ![]() This is the Colo river flowing over the bridge, after lunch it was a couple feet higher and we had to drive around over the Putty road bridge. ![]() It was hard to find dry ground to stop for lunch, but in the end we lucked out with an under cover BBQ and tables at the campground. ![]() ![]() On the way back on of the trucks had some electric trouble, but the 2 mechanics and one engineer soon had it working again. ![]() The grading for the track was 'C', but after running into this Pulsar on P's with four teenagers in it we soon coined the phrase 'P' grade. The thing made it all the way through the track only needing a push through one bad rutted section. I'm sure they will find some damage underneath when they're game to look. ![]() BTW - nothing takes the edge of your macho 4x4 moment like running into a Pulsar half way up the track.. Lastly - a little sidetrack. ![]() First the big trucks went up and then everyone else, no doubt feeling a little down about the Pulsar also had a go. One of the comp trucks - ![]() And one of the more standard 4x4's - ![]() My NT impressed all the live axle guys with this awesome display of wheel travel.. ![]() ![]() ![]() All the kids seemed to have a great time and every day since my 4 year old has been pestering me to get a real monster truck like the Maverick. I tell him he needs to convince his mother more than me..

What did I learn ?
Hmmm .. . . If you drive a Pajero DO NOT get involved in the toyota Vs. Nissan sledging - you will become the target of both.. Live axle guys ARE NOT impressed by the wheel travel in a Pajero. And lastly, be VERY careful sledging the live axle guys when thir kids become car sick - Karma WILL catch up with you..
