    Patrol 3.0 CRD longevity

    Hey all,

Thinking about my next vehicle and considering a patrol. Have done a little poking around the patrol forums but everyone seems a bit crazy over there so I thought I'd ask the kind folk here. Obviously steer clear of the early ZD30s (personal experience with my old mans 01 self destructing earlier this year) but does anyone have any experience with the more recent (07 onwards) CRD 3.0L patrols? Concerns me a little bit having such a small engine running such a large, heavy vehicle. Would be looking at getting one second hand with low kms (<50,000 ideally) and selling it at around the 200,000km mark (probably). Any common significant issues to worry about with the CRD and the auto box in em?

Don't be fooled by the size of the engine, the ZD30 packs quite a punch even in the bohemoth that is the Patrol. Make sure it's got an intercooler, they get a large performance increase with one installed.

Yeap the ZD30 in a Patrol is a pretty quick unit for a diesel.
Pajero still has better acceleration but by no means would I call the ZD30 a slug.

A few specs to look at.

        Patrol ST diesel
Kerb Weight 2486kg Pay Load 574kg
        Power 118kW @ 3200rpm
        Torque 380Nm @ 2000rpm

        Pajero NS VR-X
Kerb Weight 2085kg Pay Load 945kgs nearly a one tonner
        Power 118kW @ 3800rpm
        Torque 381Nm @ 2000rpm

There are still reports of the later ones going bang. Less than the earlier ones but perhaps thats because they haven't racked up the km yet.

Could you not fix this easily with a firmware update. x temp = x less fuel?

From all reports (nothing from experience sorry) is that they are somewhat thirsty for what they are. (have read 12-15 litres per hundred) Flip side is they apparently have great low end torque.
                    Cheers, Bundy.

My parents owned an 07 I think it was, or maybe it was an 06.
In comparison to the Paj, and in fact any other 4wd I've owned I found it massively uncomfortable to drive (I'm pretty tall). Terrible driving position and awful seats.
I also found it stupidly under powered. Big holes in the torque and power delivery - the gear ratios are just all wrong and have you swimming for revs to get power.
I've never heard anything but pretty good things about the economy on Mum and Dad's Patrol though. Being the grey nomads they were getting 12 to 14 l/100 towing their 22 foot van I think from memory.
They updated to our 07 Touareg R5 which is a better 4wd for their needs in every single respect - I know their needs are not a real 4wders needs - they just want great towing, comfy and enjoyable tow car - also wanted auto where the Patrol was manual.

You'd never get me into one.
Not after moving up from the NM Petrol to an NT Diesel two weeks ago.

I had a 02 ZD30 model with 190k on it when I bought it. Thankfully I bought it through a nissan dealership cause after 1000km of owning it I didnt like the amount of blow by it had so had a leak down test performed after being told they all look like a steam train out the dip stick with the motor running.... In the end the back two cylinders had 50C piece sized holes in the pistons and the motor required a full rebuild. Thankfully done under the statutory warranty.

With 33's and a 3" lift and all the usuals (bull bar, winch etc) the average economy was roughly 19LT/100 around town and 15 ish on the highway. Dismal IMO.

Glad to see the arse end of that thing

I looked at the patrol a few times when buying a pajero.

The first thing that immediately put me off was the carrying capacity 540kg vs pajeros 750kg. However I just looked for the hell of it they have finally fixed it with 750-850kg in the current patrols (not utes)

I also looked before I purchased my NP auto. The Patrol was advertised as a 4 speed auto but in reality it's a 3 speed with overdrive.

I considered ZD30 patrol too before settling on the NP Pajero.
2 major things put me off.
1 being the ZD30's extroadinary ability to self destruct.
The 2nd was the safety factor. Get on youtube and check out the frontal offset crash tests for the GU patrol and then for a NM / NP pajero..... There is no comparison.
I am very happy to have my family safely and reliably cruising around in a Pajero
